Do You Know The Difference Between Single Speed Road Bikes And Fixies?
Single speed road bikes are taking over in many big cities. They are hip to ride and very refreshing. Both fixed and single speed bikes have been around for ages in fact that is where biking started. Today riders have moved backwards in time to when the multi geared bike didn’t exist yet.
So what exactly is a single speed
or fixed gear bike you ask. Typically it is a bike where there are no shifters, shifter cables, or derailleur. It has one sprocket at the front and a single sprocket at the back giving it only one gear. It is typically more reliable than geared bikes because the high maintenance components are not there. This also makes it easier to maintain as well as it gives it a more sleek appearance.
There is a difference between
the fixed gear and the single speed in that the single speed has a freewheel at the back so you can coast where a fixed wheel means the rider cannot coast but many people see them as one and the same.
This style of bicycle is often called the fixie bicycle but as I said already you can't freewheel on a fixie. Riding a fixie type of bike takes a bit of getting used to. Just about anyone who has tried to ride one has attempted to coast at some point. This type of bike will simply not permit it. It often takes a couple of weeks of riding to get the brain deprogrammed and become comfortable riding a fixed gear.
When you’re travelling at a higher speed you have to learn to pedal smoothly at a very high cadence for your feet to keep up to the pedals. This is good for building your soup-lexes and in fact many pro riders use a single speed bike to do just that when they are in training. Riding a fixed gear bike is without a doubt outstanding physical exercise.
When it comes to climb a hill you can’t switch gears because
you don’t have any to switch to. This means you have to get out of the saddle and pedal, even though your pedaling won’t be at optimum efficiency. Pushing a fixie up hills makes you work with an increased intensity instead of what you normally might with a geared bike. Some very difficult inclines you may find you have to get off the bike and walk.
As you descend hills you simply have to continue to pedal. This causes you to spin at a much quicker pase than you normally would on a multi geared bike. As a rule I feel riders cruise too much anyway. Riding a fixed-gear bike might just help you stop this bad habit. Always having to keep your legs spinning keeps your leg muscles flexible, and creates incredible blood flow.
People have found that fixies also give you better skid control making them excellent for riding in slippery damp or frozen conditions.
All in all riding single speed road bikes or fixies is an experience that people are catching on to in a big way. You might want to try one for your next ride.
