If they are ordinary pocket knives, I don't see why they wouldn't be allowed. I'm sure chefs import much bigger and more dangerous knives for use in the kitchen.
Knives that are clearly intended to be used as weapons would, I'm sure, not be allowed. But that wouldn't apply to a standard pocket knife.
As for the snippy comments about knives, the problem on the streets isn't the knives, it's the people carrying them. When I was a kid I had a pocket knife that I used in crafts, etc. and it's ridiculous that a child today might be denied this because of "the knife problem".
