has anybody owned an okuma classic pro 302l reel are they any good?
I bided one on eBay before. My max bit including S&H was under $20 and I did not expect to win the bid. I end up buying a reel I don't need at a price I couldn't complain. LOL
The reel won't cast light rigs well. It didn't do well on heavier rigs too. But if you keep the weight of your rig within the reel's comfort zone, the reel will cast okay. The reel's anti-reverse mechanism is a little noisier than I'd like and it didn't have an infinite anti-reverse. This is perfectly normal for a reel at that range so no complains there. The reel wasn't constructed to endure heavy use/abuse but it could handle smaller saltwater species with ease. The drag isn't very powerful but it seemed smooth enough. I've only landed bonitos, barracudas and some smaller rockfish with that reel; the reel got more than enough power to spare. I didn't own the reel for very long and I've never fished in very deep waters (where extra cranking power is needed) or targeted hard fighting fish like tuna with that reel so I really don't know the real limit of that reel. But, I think it will handle smaller hard fighting saltwater species up to about 15-20 pounds and freshwater catfish species up to around 30 pounds without too much trouble. For a reel at that price range, I think it did more than just okay. Other than that narrower than average castable weight range, I don't have much to complain about that reel.
PS: The reel won't be the easiest reel the take apart or put back together, but it was simple enough for people who wish to maintain and clean their reels themselves.
