The wrong reel for leisure fishing?
I have bought two reels that have a free spool. So when I am on to a fish and reel, it locks on so no line can come out therefore I have lost a few big carp. Any suggestions? Help?
If I understand what you have said correctly, you are trying to use the freespool facility as your main clutch (or drag). That is not how you should be using it.
A freespool reel has two clutches. The first one is the freespool. You use that facility when you are not holding the rod such that when a fish takes your bait it can run and take line from your reel without pulling the rod into the water.
When you pick up your rod and reel and start to play the fish by turning the handle of your reel the freespool facility locks and the second (main) clutch comes into play. That clutch is the one you use to protect your line. It is most likely either adjusted via a knob at the back of the reel body or by a rotating nut on the front of the line spool. It sounds as if yours is currently adjusted too tight so that no line can be pulled off at all. You need to loosen it so that line can be taken off it while you are playing a fish. If you adjust it now so that there is some give you can perfect the adjustment when you are next playing a fish. Most people make ongoing adjustments in this way.
I think that will solve your problem. Freespool reels are a great invention and are perfect for leisure fishing. Remember though that not all types of fishing require you to put the rod down. In such circumstances you won't actually need to use the freespool facility at all and are far more likely just to use the second, main clutch.
