TFO Fly Rods Are Designed For Excellent Fly Rod Action
What is fly rod "action", and why is it important? What are the differences between a "fast action" and a "medium action" rod?
The action of a rod is determined by where it bends - nearest the tip for a true "fast action" rod. As the "action" slows from "fast" to "medium", more of the rod tends to bend or flex from the tip area down along the rod toward the handle, or "butt". Therefore, "medium" rods bend toward the middle, and "slow" rods bend almost their entire length. Faster rods are stiff in the butt area and flexible in the tip. Fast rods deliver a lot of power and can cast better than a slower rod.
There are several reasons to use fast action rods, most of which are important to more experienced anglers. They can cast further and can handle heavy lines better (important when using sinking lines). Of importance to saltwater fishers, fast action rods can cast bait fish imitation flies (widely used in saltwater fly fishing) and cast better in windy conditions (which usually exist when fishing in saltwater). Fast action rods use the tip to send the Fly Line, and providing the casting is performed correctly, the rod actually does just about all the work.
Medium action rods flex in the upper half of the rod, providing a slower response and a more relaxed casting style than a fast action rod. Generally, because it is a more forgiving rod action, medium action rods are usually recommended for the beginning fly fisher who is just starting to learn. Many experts believe a medium action graphite rod is a good "starter" rod, since it will exhibit a good balance of casting response, power and general fishing performance, and will be a less frustrating experience for a beginner.
However, rod action alone is not the entire story. TFO designs its fly rods to balance three performance factors - presentation, distance and lifting - so that each rod series provides the mix of functions that is most suitable for the kind of fishing to be done. "Presentation" is all about accuracy and how the fly and leader land on the water. "Distance" indicates how far the line and fly can be cast. "Lifting" is a measure of lifting power when fighting a hooked fish (important for large fish).

The Finesse Series, designed for those who fish small flies and fine tippets on light lines at short to medium distances, has a chart that reflects strong emphasis on presentation, mid-range emphasis on distance and negligible emphasis on lifting.
