Apparently all it takes to make a form of torture acceptable is to invent a story in which using that form of torture ends up saving lives. So...If I can invent a story in which James Bong is tortured and it ends up saving lives, then I guess it's ok to use that form of torture for any purpose whatever, right?
I think everyone agrees that if you are certain that torture would prevent the attack, then it is okay. The problem is that sort of scenario never occurs in the real world. In the real world, there may be varying degrees of suspicion that a detainee has vital knowledge but that is all they are, suspicions. Who decides how much suspicion is enough to authorize torture? What kind of torture? How can we be sure the "decider" is not biased is some way? In the real world, the best policy is simply not to torture.
