Dev Anand : In the Role of a Star, Producer and Filmmaker
Dev Anand, lovingly referred to as the evergreen performer of Hindi cinema, made viewers go mad with his acting skills. He was a master in the field of acting, in making movies and in directing too. He is from Gurdaspur District and has the notable film makers Chetan Anand and Vijay Anand as his siblings. Mother of the popular international director Shekar Kapur, Sheel Kanta Kapur, is his sister.
His contribution, passion and dedication towards Indian cinema made Government of India honor him with the prestigious Padma Bhushan and Dadasaheb Phalke Award. He was working at the military office until he was given a role. Hum Ek Hain was his debut film. But, he got his 1st break after the release of Ziddi. He was cast opposite to Kamini Kaushal in this movie, which tasted success. After the success of his movie, Dev Anand founded Navketan, which was his own film producing company, in 1949.
He selected Guru Dutt to direct his movie Baazi and the movie became a huge success proving his decision to be correct. 1952 release Taxi Driver was also blockbuster. The female lead of the movie, Kalpana Kartik, became his wife in the future.
His unique way of dialogue delivery, while constantly shaking his head, became popular among his followers. His success started flourishing in the 1950's with movies such as Insaniyat and Kala Pani. His enactment in the latter, won Dev Anand the Best Actor Award. 6 films became smash hits in which he acted with Suraiya.
His debut film in color was Guide, in which he played a role with Waheeda Rehman. The story of this movie is an adaptation of a novel penned by R K Narayan, noted writer. This film sees an excellent performance of Dev Anand, which goes through several emotions like comedy, romance, greed and finally salvation.
He reunited with Vijay Anand to make Jewel Thief, which consisted of the charming, talented and glamorous ladies like Tanuja, Vyjanthimala, Faryal, Helen and Anju Mahendru, who reined the industry. Their 2nd collaborative project, Johnny Mera Naam, was also a huge success. His first film as a director Hare Rama Hare Krishna saw the appearance of Zeenat Aman, a talented actress. Tina Munim was another actress who was also introduced by him.
